Brief History, Present & Vision of the College
Begunia College, Begunia has the distinction of being the first Degree College (in 1985) in Begunia Block which was established in 1978. The journey started with founder of the College Late Comrade Gangadhar Paikray, Freedom Fighter & Leader in Communist Party of India (12th July 1915 – 31st August 1999) (then first MLA of Begunia-Bolagarh Constituency in 1961 & re-elected in 1967 & 1971) and local intelligentsia of the Begunia Block giving a thought of opening a college for the then Matric passed students of the remote villages in the vicinity. With great efforts and perseverance, their dream materialized on 17th July 1978 (Celebrated as Foundation Day of the College). It helped the students in the region to have easy access to College Education which would otherwise have remained a distant dream for many of them.
This year 2024 the College has turned 46 and will be celebrating Golden Jubilee in another 4 years’ time i.e., in the year 2028. The Journey so far has been incredible, it started with no land of its own and with few rooms with asbestos roofs to a beautiful 15 Acre Campus now with New Well-Equipped Laboratories, a New Library, New Buildings, Smart classroom, the College has transformed itself to an Educational Institution of Repute in the region.
Located at about a distance of 1.2 KMs from NH-57 on the left of the connecting road to NH-57 viz., Begunia Road (Parichala Road) which connects the NH at Begunia Post Office Square on the left of NH towards Nayagarh. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the Begunia Market and Nearby Villages the College provides a serene environment for imparting Quality Education.
The College is a composite one having +2 Arts & Science, +3 Arts & Science & Vocational streams in a single campus offering quality education to the aspirants of the region. Intermediate Arts (Now +2 Arts) was started in the Academic Session 1979-80 with 128 seats which later increased to 192 seats from the Academic Season 1985-86 and then further increased to 224 seats from the Academic Session 2016-17 and then finally increased to the present strength of 256 seats from the Academic Session 2021-22. Intermediate Science (Now +2 Science) was started in the Academic Session 1985-86 with 64 seats and got Permanent Affiliation from Utkal University in the Academic Session 2020-21.

The College also offers extra-curricular activities like NSS, SSG, Rovers & Rangers, Youth Red Cross & Self Defence Program for Girl Students. Seminars, Science Exhibitions, Health Camps, Blood Donation Camps, Social Awareness Programs, Plantations, and many more such programs are regularly organized to enhance the outlook, health, and social responsibility of the student participants. Students from this College have participated in Mountaineering at Darjeeling, the Independence Day Parade at the State Level.
College does have a number of Sports activities for the students and each year organizes sports events in the College where other Colleges of the district participate. Students also participate in sports events held by other colleges and also in other states.
The Alumni of the College have made names for themselves in different fields such as Politics, Theatres, Television, in Corporate Sector, Military, Banking, Education, State Administration, and many other noble fields. Their achievements have made this College Proud and inspired the later generations of Students to follow in their footsteps.
The college plans to have Job Fairs for the Final Year Students of the College and Career Counseling Work Shops for the Students of the Locality.
